Portsmouth Township, MI (August 21, 2008) - After 4 years, the grassroots group, Friends of Portsmouth Township, has frustrated Wal-Mart into dropping its plans for a 184,000-square-foot supercenter in this small, rural community.
Wal-Mart recently announced it was withdrawing its application to build the big-box days before this group's appeal hearing with the state of Michigan over the state's decision to release the land from the farmland preservation act. The group, mainly concerned with the projects impact on local businesses and the development of productive farmland, opposed the project from the get-go. After the city rezoned the farmland to commercial, the group filed appeal after appeal to delay the project, and educate the community on its impacts.
