Monsey, NY (Mar. 26, 2008) - Plans for a proposed 215,000-square-foot Wal-Mart supercenter have been shelved due to a well organized opposition campaign waged by a local grassroots group, Neighborhood Retail Alliance.
Wal-Mart focused much money and efforts with their attempts to woo the community. While Wal-Mart hired a PR firm to produce and distribute mailings to the resident’s homes, the group united this largely Orthodox Jewish community through rallies, literature, ads, and petitions.
Their work proved worthwhile, as the town planning board rejected Wal-Mart’s environmental impact report in June of 2007. With community sentiment strongly opposed to the project, the developer has given up.
