Cumberland, ME (August 14, 2008) - More than 100 people turned out to a town council meeting in Cumberland, Maine to speak against a proposed development that would include two big-box stores and three smaller outlets.

The hearing was the first of what is likely to be a lengthy re-zoning process, which opponents are now organizing to fight. Due to the possible big-box suitors, the 320,000-square-foot development may be subject to Maine's Informed Growth Act. Enacted last year, the act requires cities to conduct an economic impact analysis for proposed stores larger than 75,000 square feet.
