Berlin, VT (Apr. 2, 2008) - The grassroots group, Citizens for Community and Local Prosperity, pressured Home Depot into withdrawing its plans for a new home improvement store.
With a year already passing since the project was first proposed, the certainty of a long fight ahead proved to be too much for the retailer. Home Depot surprised group members by pulling out on the day of a district environmental court hearing, where the group planned to highlight the proposal's threat to nearby waterways.
The 150-member group galvanized opposition by exposing a biased economic impact study that Home Depot submitted with its application. In addition to environmental concerns, they highlighted traffic congestion and detrimental effects to the local business environment as very contentious issues.
